New toilet flange, on top of tile?

$

I watched the installation video for cutting tile around an existing toilet flange, but I am replacing the flange as the old one was busted. I also replaced a good section of the subfloor (the toilet had leaked and the wood was rotten).

Everything I've read about installing toilet flanges says to put the flange on top of the finished floor (so on the tile), but the video doesn't cover the case when the flange is being replaced. Can I safely lay the tile and then install the flange on top of it, or should install the flange first and then follow the video's advise and cut it to 1/4" around the flange?

Toilet Flange Height

After removing old flooring, the toilet flange will sit either 1/8 inch higher than the new Snapstone flooring or 5/8 higher (if I add a half inch spacer). Which is better?

Thanks

1/8 inch is better! You want the flange to be as close to flush as possible.

Will an old clawfoot tub be too heavy on this tile? it is heavy to begin with, I can only imagine how much it weighs full of water. I am wondering if over time it will cause the corners to pop up?

Cutting the tiles with a wet saw

I am using an inexpensive wet saw tile cutter and it keeps jamming and the blade stops. I just put in a new blade and it does not help. Should I consider a better saw or better blades? Current blade I am using is a FlorCraft tile diamond blade.

Warm Tiles Easy Heat system under SnapStone

I want to install the Warm Tiles Easy Heat system under Snapstone. I will put a layer of 1/2" plywood over the subfloor. Should I router grooves in the plywood for the heating cable or would it be better to cover the heating cable with thinset? Would there be any problem with just putting the Snapstone over the heating cables?

Grout haze and tiny bumps

I let the grout dry the 24hrs and went back to clean the haze. I notice the tiles are covered with little tiny bumps that feel like sand particles. How can I remove them as the regular sponge cleaning isn't doing it so far. Should I go with the citrus cleaner and hot water or will they wear off with time.

Thanks

SnapStone reply:
This is pretty common, but it's also very easy to clean. The best product I've found is called Krud Kutter, available at most home centers, just spray it on the areas that need cleaning and let it sit about two minutes then scrub it lightly with a white srub pad then rinse with clean water and a sponge. Hope this helps.

White marks on Porcelain tile

Hi everyone,

I am totally new to this forum so hope the community accept me as a new friend.

I have had my porcelain floor tile just installed, and it took quite sometime after that to remove all the dirt on top of it. after i finished cleaning there were too many white marks all around "like cloudy marks" that they refused to go away no matter what i try. when i touch the tile with my hands it feels rough on those spots compared to the other areas where they feel smooth and they are shiny. Is there a solution to this problem? I wanted to post pictures on here but couldn't find how to do it. Thanks all

creaking sound

I have laid all the tile in a foyer area that connects to a bathroon and hallway to a mudroom. It looks great. It has been down for 3 days and is making creaking noise like the plastic joints move when I walk on some of them. It did not do this at first. I only had to use a floor leveling compound in front of the stairs. Will the creaking stop when I cover the joints with grout? If not what can I do about the creaking?

SnapStone reply:
Without hearing the noise first hand, it is difficult to know exactly the source. Do the areas that "creak" also appear to move (depress) when you walk on them? If the movement is excessive, it could be the subfloor has a low area beneath.

Generally speaking, any noise caused by the interlocking tabs moving against one another will be eliminated after the grout is installed.

If you have a digital camera that can take movies with sound, please email a clip to jonathan@snapstone.net and I will listen and try to diagnose the sound. Also, send us a picture when you are done!

Can I install snapstone over slate tile

basement flooring

Have been considering numerous options for flooring in our basement, where we just to out 1100sqft. of carpet. Does snapstone have any special considerations when being laid directly on cement floor?

SnapStone reply:
There are no special requirements for concrete - just make sure the floor is flat and stable (no loose concrete).

One rule of thumb is if the tile rocks on the floor, it is not flat enough.

If there are voids or low spots in the floor, use a self-leveling compound to fill. SnapStone can be installed over cracked concrete as long as the concrete is level on both sides of the crack; that is, there cannot be any heaving on either side of the crack.

If you recently removed carpeting, please make sure no adhesive residue remains on the floor. It will complicate the installation process, and could cause some noise problems later (the adhesive sticks to the bottom of the SnapStone tray, but can pull away making a "tearing" or "scraping" sound - like masking tape being pulled from a surface).

If there is adhesive residue, you can try to scrape it off, or it might be faster/easier to apply a skim coat that will cover the adhesive.

Lastly, keep in mind that SnapStone, while made of moisture impervious materials and not harmed by water, does not solve or eliminate moisture issues. If you have a wet basement, the moisture under SnapStone (and any other flooring choice for that matter) can lead to mold and mildew problems.

Thank you for considering SnapStone for your basement! Please let us know if you have any other questions.

Another benifit of SnapStone is if the concrete has cracks, control or saw joints, most concrete does, then expensive crack isolation membranes would be needed.
